Just as a chameleon changes its colour to adapt to its environment, the Cushie Tushie Chameleon nappy can change and adapt to the needs of a growing baby and busy family. The Chameleon is a ‘hybrid’ nappy that can be used with Cushie Tushies cloth absorbent boosters OR the Chameleon Singles 100% biodegradable disposable absorbent inserts, making these nappies both reusable and disposable!

Not only do they adapt to your needs on a daily basis, they also look great and come in a variety of colours and designs that are so super soft!

When used as a full cloth nappy, the Chameleon comes with two absorbent boosters made from a seriously thirsty bamboo/cotton blend and topped with a stay-dry microfleece.

Combine the Chameleon cloth nappy cover with a Chameleon Singles 100% biodegradable disposable absorbent insert and you have a very simple and effective disposable nappy. This option is perfect for travelling, as a stand-in if your cloth absorbent boosters are not dry, for big overnight wetting babies, for daycare or babysitters, or for those times when you are sick or simply feeling overwhelmed by everyday life!

Summertime is potty training time and Close Parent’s reusable training pants make the transition from nappy to potty easy and hassle free…

With cute embroidered characters, the pull-up style pant is designed to hold ‘little accidents’ (due to the waterproof outer,)while allowing your toddler the feeling of wetness to help little ones stay dry sooner. Super-slim, the training pants have snug-fitting leg cuffs and waistband and come in gorgeously super soft soya velour (Cosy Fit) and fast-drying microfibre (Cool Fit).

Available in 4 sizes: Small – 12-18m, Medium – 18 – 24m, Large – 2 – 2½ years, Extra large – 2½ +, they come in a pack of 2. RRP $38

Talking about toilet training have you heard of Elimination Communication? This method of toileting has been handed down from generation to generation, and turns the tables on infant toilet training, making it ecologically sustainable, fascinating and fun!

This very natural, gentle, environmentally friendly way of dealing with your babies waste is based on the belief that babies are aware of their elimination processes from birth and are able to communicate this awareness. Tuning into your babies needs can enhance your communication and bond with your baby. As the practice progresses and the communication deepens, you can come to intuitively ‘know’ when your baby needs to eliminate and can respond accordingly.

Elimination Communication can be practiced full or part-time, or can even be put on hold during times when circumstances make it more difficult. As each family and baby is unique, so is the way they tailor their practice of EC to suit their needs.

Turning to this method is a way of reducing our environmental impact. The savings in water usage, detergents, plastics consumed, trees used for wood pulp, chemical production methods, not to mention non-biodegradable landfill, unsustainable, non-organic cotton farming, and of course transportation, are very significant for the earth.

I’ve heard so much about these amber necklaces how do they work?

The skin’s warmth releases healing oils from the amber, a resin, which is absorbed into the bloodstream. Amber is associated with sunlight and warmth and reputed to boost the immune system, reduce inflammation, accelerates the healing of wounds, reduce inflammation of the throat, ear and stomach infections and respiratory disease.

But are they safe?

As a safety feature there is a knot before and after each bead, so that even in the extremely unlikely event of the string being torn, no beads are lost and there is no risk of choking. Necklaces are secured with a traditional screw clasp, not a sterling silver hook and ring.

So when is it safe for my baby to wear the necklace?

The necklace may be worn as soon as the baby starts teething or showing any signs of pain or discomfort from teething. We recommend a bracelet/ anklet for the really young bubs who still sleep through out the day, or to wrap the necklace around their ankle (which can be held in place with a sock).

Will this necklace solve my baby teething problems on its own?

This necklace is a natural teething aid relief, it will assist with alleviating teething pain and will provide assistance with restlessness, irritability, acidity and drooling.

What is the key ingredient in amber?

The Baltic amber-succinic- is fossilized resin produced by plants 40 – 50 million years ago. In nature plants would have used the resin as an antibiotic against viruses, a substance healing cuts or a plaster for wound dressing. Now fossilized, its healing properties have been captured and are release once the skin has warmed the resin.

What research has been done on Amber?

The active ingredient in Baltic amber is succinic acid, which was analysed by the pioneer of modern bacteriology and Nobel-prize winner Robert Koch (1886). He confirmed its positive influences and discovered that there is no risk of the accumulation of surplus amounts of succinic acid in the human organism. Recent scientific research has also proved that succinic acid has a very positive influence on the human organism, it strengthens the body, improves immunity, the course of energy-related processes and the balance of acids.

Baltic amber vs. other amber?

Baltic ambers healing properties are due to its high succinic acid content. Of all types of amber, Baltic amber contains the most succinic acid, which makes it the most valued. Succinic acid is not found in any fossil resins similar to amber.

Why natural pain relief vs. chemicals?

Unlike teething gels or pain relief syrups, the traditional beaded amber necklaces imported from the Baltic region are a less intrusive remedy for the pain and side effects of teething, such as lack of appetite, upset tummies, earache, fevers and colds. A natural analgesic, amber will help calm a baby without resorting to drugs which are messy to administer and can wear off whilst sleeping.

How long will the necklace last?

The teething necklaces are specifically designed for use with babies and are therefore extremely durable. With the right care, one necklace will last and become a treasured heirloom to pass down in the family.

Amber Facts:

Amber stores static electricity.

Amber is the lightest weight & softest of all gems.

It is one of only a handful of gems of vegetative, not mineral, origin.

Amber is warm against the skin.

True amber is light enough to float in salt water, if not weighed down by other substances (like silver), but it won’t float to the top

Inhabitants of the Baltic Sea area can still find raw amber washed up on the shore after storms.

In Austria, Switzerland and Germany amber teething necklaces are sold in local pharmacies as doctors have long known about the healing properties of amber which include calmative, analgesic, anti-fever functions.

Breast is best but when you have no choice or simply have decided to switch over to formula then choosing a suitable bottle is simple right? …well actually there is more to it than meets the eye. Have you heard of Bisphenol A (BPA)? BPA is a chemical widely used in the production of polycarbonate plastics – the material used to make the vast majority of baby bottles.

In August 2007, an expert government panel found there is concern that bisphenol A causes neural and behavior problems among children who have been exposed to the chemical before or after birth. Newborns and developing fetuses are, in general, highly vulnerable to toxic exposures, so when choosing bottles for your bub, ask are they BPA free?

At Baby Yeti we have researched our bottles extensively to bring to you BPA free bottles in the Green to Grow, Thinkbaby and Silikids ranges. For parents concerned about toxins in plastics we stock glass bottles in the Green to Grow and Silikids range with silicone skins sold separately to help prevent breakage and heat transference. We believe peace of mind is everything…

Bamboo is one of nature’s most versatile creations, a sustainable resource and a wonder wood. It grows quickly, needs very little to no water and uses less space than cotton. Bamboo inhales CO2 and exhales O2 into the atmosphere – generating more oxygen than trees! Organically grown, it is naturally pest resistant, making it 100% pesticide free. No bleach or chlorine is used.

Bamboo is also 60% more absorbent than cotton, making it the ideal choice for reusable nappies. Not only does it retain twice as much moisture as cotton alone, its antimicrobial properties make it the healthy choice for your baby’s bottom. The antimicrobial properties have been scientifically tested to remain even after extended washing, so your baby’s body is naturally protected from bacteria, mould, mildew and fungus, which helps minimize nappy rash.

Bamboo is 100% biodegradable, making it the smart choice for our environment.

Bamboo is widely used as inserts and liners in disposable nappies, this wonder material has many benefits for baby and for our planet.

Attachment parenting (also called “natural parenting” or “instinctive parenting”) is an approach to parenting based on the principle of understanding a child’s emotional and physical needs and responding sensitively to these needs…

The focus of attachment parenting is on building a strong relationship between parents and child. There are no set of rules, the practices simply help to develop a close, empathic relationship with your child in an understanding and nurturing way.

There are 5 easy steps to natural parenting however no matter what the textbooks say, the internet forums, friends or family, the main thing is to trust your own instincts and connection with your child.

1. Let Your Baby Lead Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding helps you get to know your baby, provides the best nutrition for your baby, provides comfort for your baby, and creates a loving and nurturing bond between mother and baby. For many mothers the experience of breastfeeding may not be so easy at first. Babies are born needing to be held skin-to-skin, touch releases the hormone oxytocin in both mother and baby, by holding your baby and spending time close together this will enhance their emotional closeness and their openness to breastfeed. You will then also be able to understand their cues and demands for feeding.

2. Sleep with baby

Co-sleeping is a cultural norm for many countries around the world. Many mums now are recognising the countless benefits sharing your sleep with baby may have. When done *safely, mother-infant co-sleeping contributes to a beautiful bonding experience both day and night. Co-sleeping does not necessairly mean sleeping in the same bed, it can mean sleeping close by in the same room.

Co-sleeping benefits:

Baby sleeps well and in comfort and trust

Encourages both infant and maternal health & wellbeing

Mum can respond quickly to their hungry baby and then settle baby back to sleep quickly.

Helps parents who are separated from their babies during the day regain the closeness

It is wonderful cuddling our baby during the night.

It is lovely to wake with baby in the morning.

Baby never has to cry out at night for help.

Helps to regulate baby’s temperature with the temperature of my own body.

Promotes sleep synchrony’ in which sleep patterns begin to match

Baby gradually learns sleeping behaviour and ‘etiquette’ by observation, modelling and experience with Mum and Dad.

Promotes regulation of baby’s breathing (baby has lower oxygen levels when alone)

Promotes regulation of baby’s immune system (the skin to skin contact releases oxytocin to boost baby’s immune system)

3. Wear your baby

Infants thrive through touch and “wearing” your baby is another way to meet this need. It encourages bonding and stimulates the security and warmth of the womb. It also promotes happy, healthy babies who cry less as they are close to mum, and the stimulation helps to regulate their physical responses. Parents are able to get in tune with babies demands, and wearing your baby in a carrier frees your hands to do simple tasks while the baby rests peacefully next to your body.

4. Practice Natural Living

Those who practice attachment parenting tend to live a more natural lifestyle, choosing natural products whenever possible. Cloth nappies is popular among attachment parenting parents, as the natural nature of cloth diapers reduces waste and saves money. Many parents make their own baby food using whole, organic foods. To protect children from harmful toxins, use natural cleaning products.

5, Finding balance in your family life.

The early years in your baby’s life are the most intense and demanding for a family. However, it is possible to find a balance. Communicating well with your partner and finding creative solutions to satisfying the needs of all family members will help to create balance in your family life. Aspects of attachment parenting are possible for working mums such as breastfeeding after work, carrying or “wearing” baby, co-sleeping and responding sensitively baby’s cries can help to re-connect with bub after a workday.

*The most important thing is that bed-sharing is done safely. Visit www.raisingchildren.net.au for bed sharing safety tips.
